SheNYC Arts is a festival that showcases women in theater. There’s 7 shows happening in New York City and all looked great but unfortunately, I could not attend all because I found out about it too late and only had a few spots free. Champagne problem of being addicted to Off and Off-Off Broadway is that there are too many shows happening to see them all.
She Arts also does shows in other locations. I am honestly eyeing Atlanta. I did the thing where I priced flights and hotels but have not booked anything yet. You can find more information HERE. This whole idea has opened a whole new world for me where I can start traveling for shows. 2026 is starting to look a lot differently than I thought it would because of this. But I am getting way too far ahead of myself. Actually even having mental travel plans for a time period that is 17 months in the future at all is probably getting ahead of myself but hey.
Back to NYC. This year, She Arts is happening at Classic Stage Company. I had never heard of this venue before. Its in the back room of a coffee shop and is a lot larger than I was expecting when I walked into the coffee shop.
Let me repeat that – the theater is in the back room of a coffee shop. You walk into a COFFEE SHOP and go to the theater. This is like heaven on earth. You arrive early and you order coffee and sit and drink coffee while waiting for the house to open.
I loved the venue and hope to see more shows here. The seats were comfortable and for the first show, I secured a spot where I could dangle my legs. Second show not so much. I picked a bad seat. A tall person sat in front of me so I moved and then HE MOVED so he was still in front of me. Because I was in the middle of the row, I didn’t want to ask everyone to move so I could escape.
The shows I saw were Mommy and Word of the Day. I loved Mommy. If you ever had teen angst against your mother, and let’s face it, who hasn’t – you would also like this show.

Word of the Day I did not love as much. This one was about a woman who is accused of murder, and is on house arrest. During this time, she becomes convinced someone from the outside is trying to communicate with her through the word of the day in the local newspaper. I left the show being confused about the ending. Maybe that was just me. I felt it had at least one character who added nothing to the story.

More about the venue: The house opened 15 minutes before showtime. So no need to get there too early unless you want coffee and I always want coffee. The restrooms ran out of toilet paper so that was a thing. There’s three stalls and there was a long line for the women’s restroom after the show.
I was here on one of those insanely hot summer days where thunderstorms kept popping up. Before becoming addicted to shows, the weather would have guaranteed me spending my day inside my apartment to avoid melting. I am so glad I found this world.

I do not comment often but do read all of your posts and reviews. How fortunate you are to have all the theater options available and to actually attend ! I don’t know how you share so much but i am glad you do!
