Show Review: Lowcountry, an Off Broadway Play at Linda Gross Theater

Lowcountry played at the Linda Gross Theater, also known at Atlantic Theater.  Capacity is 199. There is only the one seating section. No mezzanine or balcony.  There are steps / stairs down the sides of the seats.  I saw an older gentleman struggle to make his way down.  This was likely made worse by the loud woman behind me commenting on it.  But this is not a review of assholes in the audience.

The last date of this show was July 13, 2025.  The show was directed by Jo Bonney and starred Jodi Balfour as Tally and Babak Tafti as David, with Keith Kupferer in the minor role as Paul.

I always feel bad commenting on shows I did not love because could I have written it any better?  Of course not.  I cannot even manage to do diary type posts on a blog, so who am I to be judging an entire play?  But I did not love this.

The story is about two people matching on a dating app and then you watch the drama unfold.  You are given David’s background in the opening scene.  You find out during the show that Tally already knew about David. But you never really have a full explanation of the WHY she was motivated to go on this date with him.  Why did she want to learn…what?  His side of it?  And if so, why did she want to hear his side of it?   Was it because she just because she cared about him, or did she care about the person he hurt?  None of this is completely clear.

I have seen shows where THE THING happens and you gasp.  I feel like Lowcountry was aiming for that with the revelation that Tally targeted David.  But for me, it missed the mark because it just left some unanswered questions.

The story had some plot holes to me and contained some unnecessary dialogue and story lines that I feel could have been better used to explain Tally’s motives.   Paul’s short appearance was also clunky.   He showed up to check on David after not one but two failed-to-send texts. This wasn’t exactly believable.   I also could have lived without the killing of random roaches, since I saw one in my apartment last week and am still screaming about it.  Yes, it was likely used to set the scene but NOTHING needs to be set with a roach.

Such a minor nitpick on my end, I apologize to everyone involved in this play for my take on it.

Stage:
As far as the venue goes, I love this venue.  I have a soft spot in my heart for it.  I was in the neighborhood one day to try and see the Pride parade before a show. It was during a heatwave and I really needed to just sit down and cool off.   I went into the theater two hours before the show started to see if I could pick up my ticket that early.  Not only did the nice woman at the box office print it for me, she offered I could sit downstairs in the bar area and cool off.

Bathrooms are downstairs.  The restrooms are not labeled male and female. They are labeled stalls and stalls + urinals.  The stalls only has 6 stalls, and the line got really long after the show.

Sign says soda is $8 but it’s only $7.50. The cup is a souvenirs cup for the venue, not for the show. I have a collection of these.

If you are going to eat before or after, Lou Lou’s is around the corner.  It’s named after the owner’s dog and is also dog friendly.  They even have a dog menu HERE.

Me: Your photo of the soda is blurry and even if it wasn’t, it provides no relevant content and you suck at reviews
Me: (fights the urge to not hit submit on this post)
Still me: YOU SAID YOU WOULD STOP CARING SO MUCH JUST POST IT DAMMIT
