Las Vegas Blog: Sweet Las Vegas Suite

Note:  This is an older Las Vegas trip report that I am posting for the readers of Las Vegas blogs, entertainment of Las Vegas addicts and anyone else who loves fun.  It was written back in 2005.  Most of this information is now outdated and some places mentioned no longer exist.

Wednesday, June 8, 2005 – Day Four of Ten

Up at?  I have no idea what time I woke up.  I went downstairs and back to nickel video poker.  I’ll tell you, a $5 bill on nickel video poker goes a long way.

Keeping up with my “want to stay at every hotel” shtick, I once again check out and once again switch hotels.  Today it’s the California hotel downtown.   The cab driver starts to take me in circles downtown.  I tell him “the California is the other way.”  He starts to argue a bit.   I start to argue louder.  He then apologizes and tells me that he is very upset.  He heard on the radio that 100 people in his country were shot this morning and he is very worried about his family.   I honestly don’t know if he was jerking me around or not, I just don’t know.  I told him it was okay and just to turn around and go back towards the California.  He did and that was the end of that.

I arrive at around 11:30 and go to check in.   They don’t have any smoking rooms available so they are putting me in a suite.  Are you kidding me?  Most hotels would inform you “check in isn’t until 3:00, try back later”.  The California puts me in a suite.  Yay!   I’m here on an offer for $35 for the first night, second night comped.  So a suite for $17.50.   I LOVE Las Vegas.

What was interesting and also annoying to me was that I did not have the keys handed to me, they were handed directly to a bellman, who immediately grabbed my luggage before I even knew what was going on.  I was not expecting this and had no singles on me for a tip so I gave him a $5 tip.

I get to my room, # 1102.   It has a bedroom and a separate living room with a bar   There were two televisions, and of course, less than ten channels.  Not like it matters since I’m not here to watch television.   My windows faced Fremont Street and I could see the Rio and the Stratosphere.

Went downstairs to gamble of course.   I wanted to try a dollar video poker game, but I was a bit scared so I stuck to quarters.   I broke even.   Hit the Main Street Station Triple 7 Brew Pub for lunch.   I love this place.

Hit the Plaza and played some video poker.  Never hit too much.  Decide to do a “casino run” which is $5 in every casino.   First stop:  Golden Nugget with a Starbucks detour.  I ended up at the Golden Nugget forever turning all my $5 bills into tens and twenties and in one case, $50!   I played regular video slots, not video poker.  I kept winning on Wild Dolphins and some puzzle game – I think it’s called “It’s a Puzzle”.”  I’m not sure.  I loved it.

I leave up and hit the Four Queens.  Put my $5 into a Triple Star penny slot and hit for $25.77.  I love downtown, I really do.

By now I’ve abandoned my “$5 in every casino” rule and just keep playing.   Try some more new penny games, and don’t win.

Head to Fitzgeralds, and they have their penny/nickel section downstairs completely roped off.  Not too sure what was going on there.  So I kept going and hit the El Cortez.  At night.  By myself.   I really don’t think it’s a bad walk at all.  The El Cortez is really being fixed up nicely.   I’m not sure if this is good or bad.  I happen to like it here and have ever since I had a fateful trip a couple of years ago.  I had been losing like crazy.  I was leaving Vegas to go to Reno and had three hours to kill before heading to the airport.  I chose to kill it playing pennies at the El Cortez and ended up with $170. I only stopped because my three hours were up and I had to go to the airport.  Luck was not on my side tonight at the El Cortez though and soon enough, I was gone.

Hit Binions for the best burger in all of Las Vegas.  So good.   I didn’t play anything here.  There was just nothing appealing to me.

Next casino: Fremont – nickel video poker.  Every time I doubled a $5 bill, id cash out.  Left up $25.  Sweet!

Then I lose inside Las Vegas Club.

Same with the California itself.   I am in bed at 1:00 am.
