Show Review: Joy, an Off Broadway Musical in New York City

Joy is an Off Broadway musical, starring Betsy Wolfe, that is currently playing at Laura Pels Theatre at the Harold and Miriam Steinberg Center for Theatre. Thank you Laura Pels theater for getting me closer to 600 words for this post.

The story is about a woman named Joy Mangano from Long Island, who creates a mop. A Miracle Mop even.  You learn about her struggles she had in her personal life, while watching her success starting as the underdog in her professional life.

I had actually seen most of this movie while getting a keratin treatment in Las Vegas.  Those of you who have been following my posts for years may remember one of my bizarre experiences where I find myself giving a guy relationship advice while wearing a shower cap at a bus stop. You can find that post HERE.

But back to Joy and the Miracle Mop!  <——This looks like a good place to put an affiliate link!  Reminder, if you click it, I get some pennies.

This musical was just over 2 hours long. This was about an hour too long.  It was a good story but parts definitely could have been cut. We didn’t need to see childhood Joy for the 7 seconds she was on the stage. I don’t feel like it NEEDED the drama with her husband. It really wasn’t interesting and if you were going to show it, at least show THE drama.  Not just hinted-at suff.  It could have had one less cowboy scene. Oh yes, there were cowboy scenes. Multiple cowboy scenes.  I kid you not.

I kind of dazed out watching it and thought to myself that this is really while musicals are not my favorite.  The story of Joy may not have needed two hours, but it would have been too short to just do “Here’s Joy, here’s her mop, byeeeeeee” so you add in musical numbers to get the full length.  But the length didn’t need to be this full.

Something interesting – they actually gave out mops to some audience members.  I wish I had gotten one.  I am so jealous of those that did.

I was seated in the front row of the mezzanine.  The seats here are comfortable.  There was a huge rainstorm outside and I noticed a bunch of women had their shoes off, because wet shoes, and because gross slobs.

The venue has 425 seats and 2 stalls in the women’s room, one handicapped stall outside.  I have been here before and I know there is also at least one, possibly two, additional handicapped restrooms near the orchestra.  Making it a possible 5 stalls for women.  I was surprised that there was never a long line, given the seat to stall ratio at a show that is geared towards women.

If you are looking for a night out where there is entertainment but you do not have to use your brain, this show is for you.

At the time of writing, the show is scheduled to run through August 17.   You can check out the show’s website HERE.

Nitpick note to close this out: I have seen a few reviews of this show talking about how Joy grew up IN Long Island.  I am from Long Island and I wish for everyone to know that if you grow up on Long Island, it is ON Long Island. You are only IN Long Island if you are dead and buried there.

I started this series with the agreement inside my head that I had to keep doing it – not finding excuses to miss a day of posting.  Well that massive storm that had women barefoot inside the theater also knocked out a transformer outside my apartment.  I only have electric on one half of my apartment.  Blessed be the fruit that is the outlet for my air conditioner being on the side that is working.  But when I came home at midnight, I didn’t know what had happened yet.  I only knew some things would not turn on and my refrigerator was one of those things.  So I had to move the refrigerator at midnight, sorry to my downstairs neighbor!  Then I had to move it again this morning because it was blocking the entire kitchen, only to move it AGAIN to plug it in again.

TL;DR I am exhausted and want to use this as an excuse to get out of posting.  But I am tired, I didn’t fully proofread, are there a million typos?  Is this even good?  Should I be embarrassed at having a livejournal disguised as a blog while being in my 50s? Did I even review the show or did I use the show as a reason to babble about my life?   I am going to hit “post” in 3…2….1…….GO.
