Las Vegas Trip Report: 37 Hours in Vegas, Part One

So I explained my logic for taking this trip here.  Now here is the report!

I had originally booked Southwest, leaving San Francisco at 8:00-ish AM and arriving at 11:30-ish AM. I booked it because I had flight credit from a trip to Atlanta, where the airfare kept going down so I kept rebooking. I did not like this flight at all.  It had a layover which made the flight too long.  But the first direct flight of the day only landed half an hour earlier and was like three times the price.  What to do, what to do…..?  Ah fuck it.   I ate the Southwest ticket and booked a brand new ticket on United, arriving at 7:40 am.   I now have $42 in Southwest credit.  But they go literally nowhere from NYC that I would be flying Southwest for.  So unless a surprise trip comes up…..well whatever.

I was super, insanely excited to go to Vegas.  I ended up upgrading my seat for $24 and ended up with my own row.  I was like the tenth person off the plane.  This was so exciting!  The flight went so fast!  What time is it?  7:11!  This is an omen!

Look at pretty Las Vegas!  I never arrive in the daytime so this made me excited.

Las Vegas Pre-Trip Report: Musings of a Degenerate Gambler

Here is something you should know about people who frequent Las Vegas: They all love to talk about how cheap a trip is, and how you will never find another city in the world where you can go and stay in beautiful hotels and eat fine dining, for even a fraction of the cost as Las Vegas.  Note that I said “they” and not “we”.  I used to be part of that group.  I used to love the idea of staying in a nice hotel that I was comped in, versus paying $150/night for some shitty motel in Anywhereelse USA.

But then something happened.  I started traveling outside the United States.  Guys, I have to tell you something.  The world outside of the United States is so much cheaper.  Sure there are lots of countries you can travel to where the cost is relatively the same, or even higher than travel in the States.  But then I went to Eastern Europe.  And China.  Suddenly, that “Wow, this is such a great bargain!” Las Vegas trip morphed into “Wow, for less than the cost of a two week trip to Vegas, I can spend six weeks in China!”

So I began vowing that every trip to Las Vegas would be my last.  But see, I didn’t tell anyone this, except for my cute little stuffed dog.  He doesn’t judge or hold me accountable for things I say, so I was free to break that vow at will.

Christmas Trip to Las Vegas: Last Full Day Featuring a Run In With the Worst RTC Employee Ever.

I woke up at Four Queens very early this morning.   I had originally planned to go to Sunset Station for breakfast since I have a free buffet from MyVegas.  But I kind of didn’t want to go.   But I kind of felt like I should go.  I have not left downtown since arriving here Thursday.  Today is Saturday.  I do need to go to the Strip and take photos.  I sit around trying to decide what to do and my final decision is to go outside and take pictures of Fremont Street before all of downtown wakes up.  Then I will figure out what I want to do after.

Christmas Trip to Las Vegas: The Big Surprise Win!

Today is not only Christmas Eve, it is also unfortunately day nine of thirteen, my trip is almost over.

I head downstairs at Orleans for breakfast with $25.   Breakfast is actually at Starbucks because I have a $100 gift card.  Starbucks is supposedly only two blocks away from Orleans but this is Las Vegas so that two block walk took about fifteen minutes.

Christmas Trip to Las Vegas: Spa(ah!) and Leaving My Cosmopolitan Terrace Behind

Tuesday, December 23, 2014: Day Eight of Thirteen

I woke up insanely early today in my comfy Cosmopolitan bed and have what I recognize as an uncontrollable urge to go degenerate gambling.  I want to gamble.  I want to gamble NOW.  I want to put every dollar I own into the pretty machines downstairs.

I have been pretty good for days, but that was only because I messed up so badly on day one that I had a choice to either continue doing things that would send me to the ATM, or to slow down gambling.  I chose the latter but I am CRAVING a binge session on video poker.

The sun isn’t even up yet and I am FIENDING.   What to do?  I don’t really understand how I came up with this plan, but I decided to: Leave all my money in the room safe, walk to Walgreens across the Strip, get a Diet Pepsi, get $40 cash back and use that and only that to gamble.  It seems like a pretty good idea.  If I win, great.  If I lose, the walk back to the room to get more money might cool me off.  Right?

Leaving Las Vegas (See Also: Returning to Las Vegas)

Friday, July 31, 2009:  Day (Something) of (Something)

[If you would like to start from the beginning, the first day of this trip report can be found here.]

Today is a weird day.  I am checked into Harrahs in Las Vegas but I am leaving for California – the state – not the downtown hotel.  I will be leaving my stuff in my Las Vegas room while I am gone for three days.

My time in California is actually the intended purpose of this trip.  I just decided to book some Vegas days around it since I have the vacation time and I’m right here.

[2014 called, it wants you to know I have no freaking clue why I kept a booked room in Vegas when I was going to be in California for a weekend?]

Monday, August 3, 2009 – Day Two (Three? Four? ) of (I DON’T KNOW ANYMORE)

My flight from Oxnard back to Las Vegas is pretty empty and we land at 8:30 am.   I have to switch planes at LAX. I cannot believe the security lines at LAX.   They wrapped around outside and hit the next terminal.   But it did move fast.

Las Vegas Trip Report: Turning Free Play Into a $200 Keno Win!

Sunday, December 19, 2010 – Day Six of Nineteen

[This is part six of a nineteen day trip report.   To start at the beginning, go here.]

It’s official, my trip is 1/3 over.  How does this keep happening every time I go to Las Vegas?  Sigh.

I wake up at the El Cortez at 7:00 am, I am out at 8:00 am.

My first stop was at the front desk.  I am staying here on two different offers.  One ends today and the other starts today.  I have to check out of my first reservation and into my second.  In theory, I am now all set for another three days in the same room.  I didn’t go back to make sure my keys would still work, which was probably a huge mistake.  Today’s offer is three nights for $99, which comes with $60 dining credit and $33 free play.  I kind of wish those numbers were reversed.  $60 dining credit is a bit much for a solo person at the El Cortez.  Especially if you have just ended a three night stay where you ate at their steakhouse twice to use up the dining credit that came with that offer.

I am actually leaving downtown today!  I need to break my cycle of going back and forth between my favorite video poker machines.  I  take the Deuce bus to the 202 bus and make it all the way to the Gold Coast before I start gambling today.

Las Vegas Trip Report: December 24, 2007: Pressing My Luck in Las Vegas

Monday, December 24, 2007 – Day Two of Four

I decide to sleep in with no alarm.  I turn my phone off to avoid the inevitable my-sister-calling-me-before-the-sun-is-up-because-she-is-obnoxious thing.  And I’m up naturally at 8:30.  I tell myself I did okay though because it’s really 11:30 on my time so I did in fact, sleep in late.

I am at the El Cortez.  I head downstairs and lose and lose and lose.  Sigh.   I go to walk over to McDonalds for breakfast (SHUT. UP.)

I stop at a Press Your Luck slot machine on the way out (OKAY it isn’t really on the way out, but you know) and I got back all the money I lost.   See why I am addicted?

Tuesday, December 30, 2008 – Day Nineteen of Twenty One

I can’t believe I go home the day after tomorrow.

I had a very deep sleep last night and woke up at 9:45 AM at Sahara. I think yesterday wore me out. I go downstairs for breakfast, stopping at nickel Double Double Bonus video poker. I hit sixes:

Breakfast is at the Caravan Café at the Sahara. I got Eggs Benedict.  The service here as quick as Fitzgeralds is slow, which means it’s very excellent.  I pay for breakfast  with points and then go back out.
