Las Vegas Trip Report: Gambling, Spa-ing, Survivor. Perfection.

Sunday, December 14, 2008 – Day Three of Twenty One

I’m up at 4:00 am – not on purpose. But since I AM up, I start getting all panicky. I have an appointment at the Palms spa to use my 50% off coupon from the Las Vegas Advisor.  I’m all freaked out about getting there on time. See, this is why I don’t do well with having plans that revolve around a clock in Las Vegas. It is 4:00 am and I’m having a near breakdown because I don’t think I have enough time to do all the things I want to do before getting to the Palms by 3:00.  Mind  you, the only things I have to do before arriving at the Palms in ELEVEN HOURS are  (a) eating breakfast (b) eating lunch.  Sigh.

Saturday, December 13, 2008 – Day Two of Twenty One

I wake up at the California hotel.  My big plan of sleeping in is foiled by the light pouring in from the window shutters. Noooooooo. I’ve read people complain about how Main Street Station and the California have shutters instead of curtains and the light pours in. I never understood it, who goes to Las Vegas to sleep? But now I’m TRYING TO SLEEP and the light wakes me up. I’ll get over it.

A Very Windy Day at Niagara Falls

My plans for today were to get up before the sun, and to go watch the sunrise over the Falls.  Great idea, right?

Well these were foiled by the wind storm outside that kept me awake all night by smashing my door around and making me sit straight up in bed every time I was positive the sound was someone breaking into my room.

I ended up being awake pretty early, but not early enough.

Niagara Falls – Where Even Soda Machines Close in Winter

I was at Niagara Falls in winter.   One thing I wanted to do was the Maids of the Mist tour.  This is a boat tour where you go riding around the falls, getting completely soaked as water pours all over you.

I discovered that this ride was closed in winter, which I had to concede makes total sense.  I was freezing on dry land, I am sure it was dangerous to be out on the water in this weather.

As I walked along the water, I noticed that little kiosks were closed as well.   Like with Maids of the Mist, I can understand this as they may not do enough business in the winter to stay open.

What I found odd was that Applebees is closed for the season.   If you are unaware, Applebees is a chain restaurant.  I figured it would be open for people who live in the area.   Or for people staying in my hotel, which is attached to it.  Surely that alone would be enough to stay open year round?

applebeesBut where I drew the line between “understandable” and “you have got to be kidding me” was when I found the Coke machine that was closed for the season.

Travel Day: New York City to Niagara Falls, Ontario

I have always wanted to go to Niagara Falls.  It has been in my top three “WANT IT” forever now.  I had a few failed attempts in the past couple of years.  The best one being the time my flight was cancelled, leading to me taking off to Atlantic City instead, and winning $1000.

This is what life is all aboot, eh?

So this past November, I would be making another attempt to finally see the falls.

Christmas Trip To Atlantic City, New Jersey – Part One

I spent my entire Las Vegas trip totally confused because in my mind, it was Christmas, even though it was not.  This is because I spend every Christmas in Las Vegas.  This year however, even though I felt like I was in Vegas for Christmas, when I got back home, Christmas still had not happened.  How the hell did that happen?

The obvious question here is “Well then where are you going to go for actual Christmas?” which I answered with “Atlantic City, obviously”

Las Vegas Trip Report: Day Eight of Eight – Plus Bonus Rambling Content

December 3, 2013 – Day Eight of Eight

[This is the final day of my 2013 Thanksgiving trip to Las Vegas.  To start at the beginning, go here.]

Last day WAHHHHHHHHHH.

My flight home leaves at 4:05.  So I have until around 1:30 to still win enough money to not have to go home ever again.

I decide to not start gambling until after I check out so I don’t go too nuts.  I also decide that my goal is to not see daylight until it is time to leave to go to the airport.

Las Vegas Trip Report: December 2, 2013: Part Two of Two

Monday, December 2, 2013

[This is part nine of a ten part trip report.  To start at the beginning, go here.]

When we last left off, I was leaving the Mirage and continuing on to Flamingo to catch the 202 bus.

Here is the newly redone Imperial Palace.  It is owned by Caesars Entertainment and for some time, it seemed that they wanted us to call it a new name.  But that new name was stupid so I refused.  It seems that my boycott has caught their attention as now there is NO name on the building.  No name is better than calling it “The Quad”

Aria Animated Sign – Las Vegas, Nevada

If you are familiar with me, then you know I don’t take kindly to most changes in Las Vegas.  Or in life in general I suppose as well.

But there is one change that I cannot get enough of.  Huge animated hotel and casino signs.   The first property to introduce this was Wynn.   On one night back in December of 2008, I stood outside on a freezing night taking endless pictures of it.  Once I got home, I uploaded them and realized they were all horrible shots where you can see my breath in every picture because it was so freaking cold outside.  I still have it in my head to go back and do it all over again.

On this last trip, I repeated that night.  Only this time, Aria’s beautiful new sign was my model.

I realize not everyone has a sick fascination with seeing 238947238 pictures of a sign.  So I am making this separate post for it so as to not entirely clog up my trip report.
